January 2014 Tally

A monthly tally would give you an idea of what I do to train for my races. I use Training Peaks WKO+ to log all of my sessions so it’s really easy for me to run analytics. The program also has many in-depth features but I usually like to take a broader look to see my overall progression throughout the season.

January has been a challenging month. My bike sessions have suffered from the constant snowfall and blistering temperatures. This is the time of the year where I don’t have much structure to my training, as long as the staple workouts are done. Junk miles are not as important right now, so it’s a bonus when I can find the time to log some easy miles.

Month – January
Duration – 51:18:42 (surprisingly the same as December ’13)
Distance – 669.55 miles
HR (avg) – 138 bpm
TSS – 1803
kJ – 9657

TriRig Omega Brakes (Installation)

They’re not your everyday conventional road brakes…So installation is also not conventional! The instructions provided by TriRig was simply a YouTube video that was embedded on their website. It’s straight forward and gives you all you need to know to properly install the brakes.

To spare you from the gritty details, here’s what I had to play around with:
– size of washer for both the front and rear brake. Using the smaller one rubbed the brake on the front fork.
– side adjustment of the brake pads did not allow for vertical play, so I had to be very precise when installing the both the front and rear, especially the rear due to the adapter.

But after about an hour of sizing the perfect cable length, with the right ferrule, and just the right about of ceramic lube, I had successfully installed these brakes.

I’m a bit of a weight weenie, so now I’m proud to say that with these brakes, my Cannondale Slice is under 19 pounds with cages, and a very heavy training rear wheel.

Here’s some photos! Did I do a good job?

Hooked the Slice back onto the trainer. Notice how the front brake cable housing shoots straight down.

like what you see?
I sure do!

I rerouted the rear cable housing from left to right to make the cable much more flush against the frame #AERO

Indoor Cycling Training, Trainer Road

The polar vortex is in full swing and it’s pretty miserable for training these past couple of weeks. The only time I’m on the roads is during the run and whenever I can get my mountain bike out for a quick spin on the snow. A buddy of mine recommended Trainer Road to me a couple years ago and the program is pretty simple. All you need is a computer, ANT+ USB stick, an indoor trainer, and a speed and cadence monitor on the bike. When set up properly, all you have to worry about is getting the workout done! (And hitting wattage goals)

Title: Sufferfest Tour 2014
If the sun is out, I sometimes keep the garage door open for some extra ventilation.
If the sun is out, I sometimes keep the garage door open for some extra ventilation. This also happened to be the time I used both my Macbook and iPad during a workout. Don’t judge! 🙂

My cycling coach creates workouts for me but this program still provides assistance in a way that it doubles as an onboard display, showing my current wattage, without me having to squint down to look at my Garmin screen, which usually fogs up anyway. (I train in an unheated garage, so condensation builds up quite easily.)

So yeah! If you’re stuck indoors because of hazardous weather, check out Trainer Road.
