March 2014 Training Totals

There’s a lot that happened this month! The poor weather in the first half of the month kept my workouts on the trainer. I let my gym membership expire. I found a new pool for my swim workouts.

But what surprised me the most were the 6 bike races that I did in just one month, including two doubles and a criterium. When I signed up for the Tour of Battenkill bike race, I had no intention of doing any other bike races. It’s funny how plans quickly change and how easily I got hooked on road racing!

In all aspects, March was exponentially better than February – and the numbers don’t lie.

Month – February
Duration – 46:55:08
Distance – 597.43 miles
HR (avg) – 138.0 bpm
TSS – 1780
kJ – 11502

Month – March
Duration – 58:08:48         +27.82%
Distance – 784.18 miles   +31.26%
HR (avg) – 139.0 bpm       +0.72%
TSS – 2241                            +25.84%
kJ – 12428                            +8.05%

February 2014 Training Totals

Just like January, it was another freezing and snowy month of indoor training. February featured my first race of 2014, with a second place finish at the Old Bethpage 5K, followed by wattage tests on the trainer, resulting in a new Functional Threshold Power. Without a doubt, this month went very smoothly and according to plan.

Month – February
Duration – 46:55:08
Distance – 597.43 miles [-10.77%]
HR (avg) – 143.0 bpm [+3.62%]
TSS – 1780 [-1.28%]
kJ – 11502 [+19.10%]

Just by comparing these totals from the January report, I trained slightly less, but with greater intensity. But what we don’t see in this data is that I’ve been in the pool much more 😉

Off to March!

January 2014 Tally

A monthly tally would give you an idea of what I do to train for my races. I use Training Peaks WKO+ to log all of my sessions so it’s really easy for me to run analytics. The program also has many in-depth features but I usually like to take a broader look to see my overall progression throughout the season.

January has been a challenging month. My bike sessions have suffered from the constant snowfall and blistering temperatures. This is the time of the year where I don’t have much structure to my training, as long as the staple workouts are done. Junk miles are not as important right now, so it’s a bonus when I can find the time to log some easy miles.

Month – January
Duration – 51:18:42 (surprisingly the same as December ’13)
Distance – 669.55 miles
HR (avg) – 138 bpm
TSS – 1803
kJ – 9657
